「信念」と「事実」(a “Belief” and a “Fact”)

The key difference between a “Belief” and a “Fact” lies in “verification” and “subjectivity”:

“Fact”:

A fact is an “objective statement” that can be ”proven true or false” through evidence, observation, or reliable sources.

Example: “Water boils at 100°C at sea level.”

“Belief”:

A belief is a “subjective conviction” held by a person or group, often based on experience, upbringing, culture, or faith. It “may or may not be supported by evidence” and isn’t always universally accepted.

Example: “I believe honesty is the most important virtue.”

In short:

Facts are “verifiable”.
Beliefs are “personal or collective interpretations”, not necessarily verifiable.

You can “believe” something that isn't a “fact”, and sometimes people “refuse to accept facts” that contradict their “beliefs”.

■ 事実とは

事実は、証拠や観察、信頼できる情報によって正しいかどうかを確かめることができる、客観的な内容です。

例：水は海抜０mの高さで100℃で沸騰します。

■ 信念とは

信念は、個人や集団が持つ主観的な考えや確信であり、経験、出自、文化、宗教などに基づいています。
証拠がある場合もありますが、必ずしも事実に基づいているとは限らず、誰もが同じように信じるとは限りません。

例：私は「誠実さ」が最も大切な美徳だと信じています。
